When the Bill Cosby sex scandal first broke, there was a core group of super loyal supporters who said show me the proof.
Well that happened with the partial release of a 2005 deposition where Cosby admitted to obtaining drugs to give women for the purpose of sex.
Now that there’s proof, and it’s an admission from Cosby himself, that supporter base is fading fast.
- Cosby’s Hollywood reps, CAA, dropped him.
- Disney decided to remove a bronze bust of Cosby from Walt Disney World’s Hollywood Studios in Orlando, Florida.
- Centric TV has dropped reruns of The Cosby Show, which ran on NBC.
- Bounce TV has dropped reruns of Cosby which ran on CBS.
There’s not much left – except perhaps civil lawsuits.
What you need to remember is that the potentially valuable lawsuits are not sexual assault lawsuits. The real problem for Cosby are the defamation cases where he has said that particular women are liars.
And now that one of the alleged victims has filed a motion for a judge to release the entire 2005 deposition who knows what’s in there. The one thing we know for sure is everything we thought about Bill Cosby is wrong.
A single successful defamation case could potentially expose Cosby to millions in damages and open the door to other civil suits from other alleged victims who can claim pain and suffering.
Direct economic damages like losing out on income as a result of the defamation are tough to prove. But given how battered Cosby’s reputation is in the court of public opinion, when it comes to pain and suffering jurors are likely going to want to stick it to him.
