Guilty Verdict for Boston Bomber

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev

This verdict was a foregone conclusion, but I’m glad the victims got to hear it.  The defense strategy all along has been to concede guilt in an effort to keep their credibility for the phase they are really hoping to win: the penalty phase.

Now that the jury has returned a guilty verdict on every count, including 17 that make Dzhokhar Tsarnaev eligible for the ultimate punishment, the defense will be hoping to cash in whatever credibility chips they have to earn their client a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.  Given the speed at which this jury returned their verdict, the overwhelming evidence of guilt, and the carnage Tsarnaev caused as reflected in 30 guilty verdicts, I wouldn’t be surprised by a unanimous verdict of death. The irony is that since Massachusetts did away with the death penalty, if condemned to die, Tsarnaev will have to travel to another state for the punishment to be carried out.

Kanye West Settles Paparazzi Suit

On the eve of a civil trial over the now infamous paparazzi incident (where Kanye has previously struck a plea deal in criminal court), West has now settled with the photographer he battered.

While all of the terms of the deal have not been released, one is very much a part of the public record: under the settlement, Kanye was required to apologize to the photographer, and a pic of the two shaking hands has been spreading online like wildfire.  It’s not totally unheard of for a settlement to include an apology, though it is a bit ironic that the real beneficiary of this is the battered reputation of Kanye West.

Suge Knight Rolls into Court

Suge was back in court today, but it wasn’t for the murder case.  This time it was concerning charges that he and comedian Micah “Katt” Williams stole a photographer’s camera in Beverly Hills. The only meaningful activity was confirming that Suge’s criminal defense attorney in that case was indeed fired, and setting a new date of May 27, 2015 for Knight to appear with a new lawyer.
