April 20, 2016–Los Angeles, California–Dr. Drew announced last night that he has a new religion…”Killing Darren Kavinoky.” Before you get overly concerned, know that it was in jest as Dr. Drew tried to make his point that in his view, hiding behind religion doesn’t give a parent the freedom to NOT seek medical treatment for their children.
Mariah Walton
The case in question is regarding 20 year old Mariah Walton. Walton has publicly expressed that she would like to see charges pressed against her parents for not seeking medical treatment for her when she was a child. According to DailyMail, “Mariah Walton, 20, was refused medical treatment by her mother and father her entire life despite constant complaints of headaches and difficulty breathing because it is against their religion. Says Dr. Drew, “This can easily be fixed in childhood so the fact they didn’t fix it was insanity. It’s tantamount to insanity.”
It’s important to note that Mariah Walton’s parents claim they were unaware of Mariah’s condition was until after she sought a diagnosis at age 18.
Darren Kavinoky
Says Darren Kavinoky on the Dr. Drew HLN show, “My wondering in all this, and I really feel for this young lady–and the case illustrates obviously the tension between personal liberties and religious freedoms versus how children need to be taken care of–I just wonder how much of this was known to the parents at the time. Or is it 20/20 hindsight?”
Replies Dr. Drew, “If they had taken that child…to a doctor and that doctor, he or she, had laid hands on and put a stethoscope on that child’s chest I guarantee you in thirty seconds that doctor would have had the diagnosis.”
Dr. Drew asks his attorney panel to explain to him how not taking a child that is sick to a doctor is any different in the law’s eyes that starving the child to death or holding a gun to their head. “Why to allow this child’s heart to fail–predictably, guaranteed it’s going to fail–guarantee she is going to need a heart lung transplant. …Heart is going to fail. Kid’s going to die. Why is that different than not feeding the kid? …Or just abandoning the kid on the street and leaving them there? Or taking a bullet and put it in the head of the child? Why is this different?”
“It’s different,” answers Darren Kavinoky, “because if you are talking about religious freedom…” Dr. Drew interjects, “It’s my new religion that I get to shoot my kids in the head. That’s my new religion. Is that an exception now?”
“I don’t think so,” answers Darren Kavinoky.
“Why not?” Dr. Drew pushes back, adding, “It’s different because you don’t understand it! You’re not used to seeing it. It’s as much of a foregone conclusion for you as a bullet but it’s a foregone conclusion for me as a trained professional. Not healing not treating this is the same as the bullet. Why can’t the law say that?”
Dr. Drew goes on to propose, “So religious freedom is a First Amendment right. Aren’t there limits on what a religion can proscribe? If I say it’s my religious belief are I get to kill Darren. That’s just my religious belief. I just have to do that, and it’s my religious belief. Who are you to say not?”
Answers Darren Kavinoky, “I’m a parent too. So it’s not that I’m not sympathetic here but America is a country founded on ideas of religious freedom and the idea that we can worship how we please so it’s a very sensitive area when we start to get into the First Amendment. …It’s a slippery slope when you start getting into to government. …It gets a little bit dicier when you start getting into government legislating, when they start enacting policies that can infringe on people’s religion.”
For the record, Dr. Drew clarified that he’s not okay with his new religion to kill Darren Kavinoky, adding in a joking voice even if Darren is okay with it because he is very sensitive to these things.
