During this time of year, springtime, most of the major religions of the world have some celebration that is aligned around renewal. Whether it is Norooz, Holi, Purim, Easter or many of the other holidays celebrated in spring, this is a great time of year to take stock of where we are in our lives.
Spring is a time to ask ourselves in a real evidenced based way, “Are we getting the results that we want? Are we on the right path?”
Goals
In my experience, most of the real joy or feelings of satisfaction that I have had in my life, are less about hitting goals and are more about making steady progress towards them. Identifying a particular goal that I’m working towards and then taking some action in support of that goal is satisfying.
Springtime or a period of renewal is a great opportunity to look at our personal paths towards achieving goals. In so many respects, life is just like a cookbook. In the cookbook there are recipes for producing the various results that human beings are interested in producing in their lives.
Results
It becomes simple and somewhat formulaic that if we want to keep getting what we’re getting out of life then it’s very simple we keep doing what we’re doing. But if we want to produce different results then we’ve got to produce some different actions–or change the recipe.
So often people lull themselves into a state of inaction by saying things like, “If I felt more energetic, then I would go to the gym.” Or, “If I felt more inspired I would read a book.” And, my favorite, “If I felt healthier, I would make better food choices.”
I’ve said these kinds of things myself so I don’t sit in judgment, I’ve simply learned the lack of results this kind of thinking produces. It’s exactly backwards. The only recipe for producing any change is to take an action regardless of what we think or feel about it and then that new action will produce new thoughts and feelings. It never works the other way around.
In my keynote speech I make reference to people who have said, “Oh I want to produce the results that you produce Darren by working out.” I say, “Great! Come join us at the workouts and here’s when we do it.” Then they respond with excuses, saying things like, “Well, when I feel stronger or more energetic then I’ll join you.” And it’s exactly wrong. And it’s exactly backwards.

Spring
The only way to produce those new thoughts and feelings is by taking the action. Lose the excuses, backwards thinking, and the self destructive justifications for not acting now. Spring is the time to act the change and produce results!
A very wise man, Dr. Marty Burns, once told me, “Act like a gentlemen and the world won’t know the difference.”
This is the secret ingredient in life’s cookbook. Begin to act the change you want to produce and the results will follow.
Happy Springtime to all of my readers and I wish you the best possible results in working towards your positive life goals!
